Tunasoma

Privacy notice

Your voice matters.
So does your privacy.

Last updated: 11 October 2026

Tunasoma is a speech-to-text app operated by We Are Liberating Societies Foundation (the “Foundation”), based in Ghana. This notice explains what information the app handles, why it is used, and when it is shared.

Recording children: A parent or guardian, or the responsible school, must obtain permission before recording a child’s voice. That permission must also cover authorized Foundation staff and contractors reviewing audio and transcripts for internal evaluation.

Information the app handles

The app stores session files and settings on the device. Tunasoma does not require an in-app user account and does not intentionally ask for a user’s name or email address. A voice recording may itself identify a speaker.

How audio is processed

When cloud transcription is selected, audio is sent to GhanaNLP’s speech-to-text service to return a transcription. When local inference is selected and available, processing is performed by the configured local inference service instead. The app also saves session audio and transcription records on the device.

Foundation evaluation and storage

Completed session files and diagnostic logs may be uploaded to a Foundation-controlled Google Drive account. Authorized Foundation staff and contractors may review session audio and transcripts for internal evaluation and service improvement. Google Drive is used to store and remove these archives under the retention schedule below. This review is not model training or fine-tuning.

The Foundation does not sell session data or use it for targeted advertising. Session content is shared with GhanaNLP when cloud transcription is used, and with Google Drive for Foundation storage. Those providers process information under their own terms and privacy practices. See Google’s privacy policy.

Retention and deletion

Once a retention-enabled app update is installed, completed session data is scheduled for deletion 90 days after the session ends, both from the device and from Foundation-controlled Drive. This applies to existing sessions as well as new ones. Existing Drive archives without a recorded session end time may be retained for up to 90 days from the archive’s upload date.

The app must run its maintenance process to remove expired data. If it is closed, offline, or unable to reach Drive, deletion may be delayed until a later maintenance run. The 90-day session-retention behavior takes effect only after the updated app is installed; the notice is published ahead of that app update.

Deleting a session in the app removes its local copy. It does not immediately delete a Foundation Drive archive; that archive remains subject to the retention period above. Diagnostic logs have separate retention: up to 7 days locally and 30 days in Drive.

If a session is manually exported to removable or other external storage, that separate copy is outside the app’s automatic retention and must be deleted separately.
